In the words of the artist herself, Joanne states: 

"The U shape is an aerial view of someone sitting down with their legs crossed, the larger ones are adults and the smaller ones are children. This is representative of grandmother's teaching.

The colours pinks and purples are representative of myself, my daughter and my mum. The blue is representative of the harmony women bring and the white dots are the continuous stories handed down. "

The Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Aboriginal Girls (1912–1969) was established by the Aborigines Protection Board in a repurposed hospital. It functioned as an institution for First Nations girls who had been forcibly removed from their families under the Aborigines Protection Act (1909–1969). Girls were housed in age-segregated dormitories and trained as domestic slaves.
In 2013, a courageous group of Coota Girls Survivors—former residents of the Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Aboriginal Girls (1912–1969)—came together to establish the Coota Girls Aboriginal Corporation. Their vision was to create a Survivor-led organisation dedicated to supporting the complex healing journeys of Coota Girls Survivors, their families, and descendants. The organisation offers a practical, holistic, and culturally safe approach that nurtures social, emotional, cultural, and spiritual wellbeing.
